Principles of Proper Attire

A couple of months ago, we finished our study in the book of Proverbs. It was a very rewarding study. During the course of the study, the issue of attire came up. I felt the need to do an in depth study concerning this. What follows is a basic outline of the 'Principles of Proper Attire'. As with all issues...they are all matters of the HEART!

Pr 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

If your heart is right with the LORD...everything else falls into place!
It is also imperative that these principles are practiced for men as well as women.

1)     Cover your nakedness (Gen 3:6-7,21)
Our standard is not our culture, it is the Word of God! (ie. aprons vs. robes)

2)     Dress modestly (1Tim 2:9,10;1Pet 3:1-5)

modest – not bold;not drawing attention to one’s self (ie. tight, formfitting)

3)     Uphold the distinction between male and female (Gen 1:27-28;Deut 22:5)

God made Adam/Eve different...therefore, attire should be gender specific.
It is interesting that the world still understands this principle. (ie. pictures on bathroom doors)

4)     Be separate from the world (Rom 12:1-2;2Cor 6:14-18;1Jn 2:15-17)

Fashions for believers should be based upon the WORD of GOD...NOT...  Hollywood fashion designers,  music industry...etc.

5)     Dress like an ambassador (representative) of Jesus Christ (2Cor 5:17-20)
Ambassador – minister of the highest rank, employed by a prince/state, at the court of another

Our appearance/behaviour ought to reflect this important position.

Someone has also summarized the Bible principles of attire by using this graphic...

As can be seen from this, when one of these principles are followed, two remain unsatisfied. One can obey 2 out of 3 and still not fulfill all of the requirements in scripture. COMPLETE obedience requires adherence to all 3 principles.
